The Process of Receiving a Dental Crown

The Process of Receiving a Dental Crown from Downtown Atlanta Dentistry in Atlanta, GADental crowns, a custom, tooth-shaped cap, are one of the most effective ways to restore a smile's look and function while protecting a vulnerable or damaged natural tooth. General dentists recommend saving natural teeth, especially when other methods, such as fillings or composite bonding, prove futile. The acquiring process typically involves two appointments spanning a few weeks.

The first appointment

During the first appointment, the general dentist will begin by taking X-rays if they were not done during a consultation or if a change in the smile has happened since then. Next, they will lead patients to an operating room, where they will use an anesthetic to prevent discomfort during the tooth preparation process. Once numb, the dentist will prepare the problem tooth by removing too brittle structures, decay, or infection.

Next, the dentist or dental assistant will take images of the tooth and surrounding structures using a small scanning device. They may also create a physical mold of the tooth and surrounding areas, only requiring the patient to bite down on a bit of wax-like material. The dentist will send this information to an offsite lab to fabricate the dental crown.

Finally, the dentist will apply a temporary dental crown, likely using composite resin material for the shape of a tooth. This temporary crown can protect the vulnerable structures of the tooth while allowing it to function normally, providing patients with the security they need during the waiting period.

The waiting period

Following the first appointment, patients can typically return to work or school. The few-week waiting period that follows is simple. It is important to note that the temporary dental crown is placed with a temporary adhesive, meaning it is less strong than that used for placing the permanent crown. Therefore, patients can complete their oral hygiene routines as normal, but be sure to be gentle when moving over the temporary prosthetic and avoid alcohol-based products. They should also avoid tough, chewy, or sticky foods.

The second appointment

Once the custom or permanent dental crown is ready, the offsite sends it to our dental office, and our team will notify the patient. During the second appointment, the general dentist will remove the temporary crown and the adhesive from the tooth. If the tooth's roots are vulnerable, they may also perform a test to ensure the tooth is still alive. This test may be uncomfortable, but only for a few seconds.

Next, the dentist will test the fit of the permanent crown before applying the bonding agent. They will have the patient bite down and possibly use various tools to complete this task. If necessary, they can make minor adjustments. Once both parties are happy with the look and fit of the dental crown, the dentist will bond it into place and review care instructions to help it last for ten years or more.
